The Barrier Range, a Remnant Silverton Building in the Foreground - The Iconic Desert Landscape and Site of a Proposed Wind Farm

The German renewable energy company Epuron wants the Barrier Ranges to be home to a 282 turbine wind farm, with a further 316 to be added later.  The site is public land and leaseholders are reminded of the arrangement in any dealings with the government.  Opposition to the wind farm has been ignored, like everywhere else, and locals remain distressed about the impact on the direction their community has taken which relies heavily on tourism.    This is not only an important Australian Landscape but because of the unique character of the Silverton Broken Hill region it is one of international significance.

The photographs below have been sent to us by Marion Chapman, following a recent visit that she made to the area, which is famed not only for its beauty and uniqueness but its importance as a centre for artists.  The desert landscapes are reflected in a unique style of art that derived from early miners sketches.

FAUNA

Desert birds include Major Mitchell Cockatoos, Little Corellas, and a range of other parrots that fly around the area.   Wedge-tailed Eagles, Peregrine Brown and Black Falcons, Black Breasted Buzzards are just some of the raptors that soar along the Barrier Ranges.

The environmental issues include:
  • Kills of bird, raptors and parrots, and bat kills,
  • Soil erosion - roading and consequence of foundation excavations,
  • use of water where it is limited,
  • fire and
  • noise etc.

This is one of the few places where solar would be better than wind for power generation, but with storage, and solar would not be so intrusive on the landscape and destructive to birds and bats.

ART

The following websites provide some more information about art in the area (please note, artists mentioned in these links have not been contacted, so we do not know whether or not they support  the wind farms)
