Sunday May 14th - Coombe Mill to Ashwater and beyond

back to Brent Tor
There have been several wind farm applications in this area, none of which are active at the moment, fortunately for the people who live here. As can be seen from the situation at Fullabrook and Lamerton, a planning refusal does not mean that the threat has gone away permanently, but for the moment the people in this area can try to get on with their lives.
Locations where wind farms have been proposed during this part of the walk are Higher Beckett, near Ashwater, Swingdon near Ashwater and Broadwoodwidger.

This view on the left is from near Cross Green, looking back yet again towards Brent Tor, which yiou can just see (it was hazy again) near the centre of the photo.
upcott cross
Sunday being a day of rest, I had an easy day, walking at a relaxed pace to Ashwater. The road was on a high plateau, punctuated periodically by cross road signs. This was Upcott Cross, pointing to both Ashwater and Broadwoodwidger, names on my list of possible sites although thankfully unspoilt at least for the moment.

This is Dubbs Cross
middlecott Cross
This is Middlecott Cross and I was getting closer to Ashwater.
Ashwater
This is the road down into Ashwater. The village seemed sleepy and deserted, perhaps this time the inhabitants were having their lunch.

towards Higher Beckett
The view towards the Higher Beckett site - planning was refused for this.

I had a lift back from Ashwater to my father`s place. This had been planned as an easy day, because I have not had long to train for the walk and know I must pace myself in order to complete the full journey. I also have had injury problems in the past and need to be careful not to overstress my ankle. I would have taken a bus, but there are no buses from Ashwater on a Sunday.
Swingdon turbine site
This tower is the site for the Swingdon wind turbine, permission has been given but for the moment the turbine has not been built.
